Norcros Adhesives have recently successfully used their Permalayer anti-fracture membrane on bathroom walls in a Narrowboat!
Mandy Searle, Head of Technical Services at Norcros Adhesives, has fulfilled her lifelong dream to own a  canal boat. The boat is a 50 foot traditional narrowboat called “Evergreen”.

Mandy is now putting the finished narrowboat through its paces, but prior to that she wanted to be sure that the tiling would accommodate the significant movement stresses on board ship. When it came to the bathroom installation Mandy called upon her trusted Norcros Adhesives product range with the full knowledge and confidence that it would perform in such a demanding environment.

Firstly, Norcros Adhesives Permalayer® anti-fracture membrane was used on the bathroom walls. Permalayer® accommodates background movement whilst allowing cracks up to 3mm wide to be bridged without affecting the tiled finish. The background was a coated Melamine commonly used in both narrowboats & caravans.

The walls were cleaned prior to applying a slurry bonding coat consisting of 2 parts Norcros Rapid Porcelain Grey to 1 part Norcros Prime Bond which was then allowed to dry. A 2mm bed of Norcros Rapid Porcelain Grey was trowelled onto the walls. The Permalayer® was cut to size, laid onto the adhesive bed and rolled flat until the adhesive appeared through the surface. Once the adhesive had dried, the 100mm x 100mm glazed wall tiles were fixed using Norcros Adhesives Tile to Showers and grouted with Norcros Adhesives Stop Mould Flexible Grout in Cream.
